Moral Insanity: California's Transgender-Student Bill

According to Associated Press reports, “California has become the first state to enshrine certain rights for transgender K-12 students in state law, requiring public schools to allow those students access to whichever restroom and locker room they want.” Additionally, The new law gives students the right "to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities based on their self-perception and regardless of their birth gender” (Emphasis mine).

At first glance you might be compelled to respond in anger or even disgust but when filtered through the lens of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, I submit that we may want to respond differently.

As Paul opens his epistle, he begins with a summary of the “good news,” adding that he is “under obligation to both Greeks and to barbarians … to the wise and to the foolish” to make this good news known (Romans 1:14 ESV). In other words, no one is excluded from the hope of a new life in Christ.

Regarding Paul’s explanation as to why this good news is so urgently needed, he proceeds to describe the general condition of the entire human race. Paul is not addressing a particularly wicked segment of the society, rather he is recounting the ungodliness and unrighteousness of all of humanity who from birth suppressed the truth about God (v. 18) and “did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened”(v. 21 ESV). I must confess that in my Christian life, I have read Paul’s letter—rather self-righteously—thinking he was talking about “those other people.” I have come to see this was incorrect. He is instead giving us a recap of human history and our collective rebellion against God.

It is within this context that Paul goes on to describe the orientation of mankind’s natural inclinations when unrestrained by God, beginning in verse 26 when he writes, “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions.” Unprecedented in Paul’s writing up this point, he rather unexpectedly chooses homosexual behavior to illustrate the extent of human sin and corruption. Why this particular transgression and not something like any number of violations against the Ten Commandments? N. T. Wright suggests Paul “wants to trace the way in which humans have violated, not simply a ‘law’ given at some point in human history, but the very structure of the created order itself.”

This structure is most apparent in the male-plus-female complementarity that was established at creation (see Genesis 1–3). God made humanity male and female in order that they might work together, with God, to bring the fullness of God’s good creation into being and glorify him. This was and remains his design intent.

Paul’s point is not that there are some exceptionally wicked people out there (for all have sinned and fallen short—see Romans 3:23). Rather Paul is expressing the fact that such clear distortions of the creator’s male-plus-female intention occur in the world indicates that the human race as a whole is guilty of character-twisting idolatry.

The declaration by the California state legislature only serves to evidence this point. Such legislation only reminds us that we are by nature a rebellious people, futile in our thinking, with hearts darkened by sin. This is the inevitable course of our rebellion and it is only the grace and mercy of God himself that can deliver any of us from such futility.

In this case, we must pray for our society and these who remain in captivity and declare that any distortion of the creator’s intent for the male-plus-female structure is degrading to human dignity and undermines God’s intent for boys and girls.

Gender is not the result of “self-perception” but rather self-evident biology and appropriate nurturing of the respective sexes. This isn’t sexist; it’s simply natural! To declare and do otherwise is to promote enslavement to the oppressive and broken structures of this sin-ruined world. It is to this condition that the mission of the church remains fixed by declaring the good news that God is restoring his created order through Jesus the King, who is bringing forth a new kingdom in this world whereby men and women may grow into their full humanity knowing true freedom, peace, and joy!

Thank you. Refreshing. I needed the kick-in-the-head. As a California resident, I needed this. Rather -thanks to Paul - we all need this message.

Grace, and grace, and truth and more of the same.

I received the following response from an individual whom I would later discover is transexual. I thought it might prove helpful to include our dialogue.

S. Michael Craven recently wrote that "gender is not the result of "self-perception" but rather self-evident biology and appropriate nurturing of the respective sexes."

His statement reveals a lack of understanding of sex versus gender, They are not the same thing. It seems that he believes there are only two human karotypes, XX and XY, while it is long known and often visible that there are several other karotypes such as XXY, XXXY, and X() and several conditions such as Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Androgen Insensitivity that can make an XY fetus continue development with a female physique.

I would like him to explain to us how these people fit in with his biblical description of sex/gender. Please ask him to also address research findings that the brains of male to female transsexuals are more closely aligned with female brains than male brains.

Let us remember that God loves diversity (note homosexuality and sex changes in nature); it is only some men and women who do not.

With respect

Dr. ___ _____, PhD.

Dear Dr. _____,

Thank you for your response and your gracious manner. Allow me to try and respond to your concerns. When I write that "gender is not the result of self-perception but rather self-evident biology and appropriate nurturing of the respective sexes" wouldn't you agree that this is evident due to the presence of the definitive male and female chromosomes? Specifically, the XY sex-determination system found in humans. In this system, the sex of an individual is definitively determined by a pair of sex chromosomes, which likewise correspond to their gender. As you are no doubt aware, females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome (XX), and males have two distinct sex chromosomes (XY).

As for the variations that you mention, these are in every instance considered "abnormalities." In the case of Klinefelter syndrome there is the presence of one or more extra copies of the X chromosome in a male's cells. In this condition, extra genetic material from the X chromosome interferes with male sexual development, preventing the testicles from functioning normally and reducing the levels of testosterone. The extra genetic material may lead to taller stature, learning and reading disabilities, and other medical problems. Similarly, Triple X syndrome, results from an extra copy of the X chromosome in each of a female's cells. Females with trisomy X have three X chromosomes, for a total of 47 chromosomes per cell. Likewise, females with an extra copy of the X chromosome usually only results in taller stature. There are other disorders, which I'm sure you are aware of however, each represents a disruption in the genetic material thereby and not a normative condition. However, in most cases the patients in question are clearly male and female.

As for Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, this refers to any of several autosomal recessive diseases resulting from mutations of genes for enzymes mediating the biochemical steps of production of cortisol from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. Most of these conditions involve excessive or deficient production of sex steroids and can alter development of primary or secondary sex characteristics in some affected infants, children, or adults. Again, this is not a normative or desirable condition but one which demands treatment for the afflicted. To suggest that the presence of these abnormalities is grounds for affirming the resultant state would be, in my opinion, irresponsible medicine that ignores the biological realities and desired outcomes.

As the father of a daughter who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, Moebius syndrome, I would never affirm the mutative effects of her conditionit is a tragedy and if treatment were available we would most certainly seek a remedy.

The fact is the aforementioned conditions are rare, which again result from disruptions or failures in the genetic process. The decision of the state of California has nothing to do with these conditions and everything to do with a larger agenda aimed at destabilizing the categories of sex and gender. Persons who suffer from the belief that they are men trapped in the bodies of women (or women trapped in the bodies of men) need real help not affirmation of their delusion. Cutting off a man's private parts, giving him breast implants, shooting him full of female hormones, and taking off his beard will not make him a woman--it will make him something less than a eunuch. Surgery will not change the fact that every cell of the man's body is clearly marked male (XY).

Case in point, Dr. Jon Meyer, a Johns Hopkins psychiatrist and former director of the Gender Identity Clinic, produced a long-term follow-up of fifty postoperative and preoperative adult transsexuals treated at Johns Hopkins since the clinic was founded in 1966. Meyer reported that none showed any measurable improvement in their lives, and concluded that "sex reassignment surgery confers no objective advantage in terms of social rehabilitation."

Telling children that their gender is maleable by means of personal preference is shear folly that only threatens further harm to them and those who may be in need of real medical or psychological help.

As for your statement that God loves diversity, implying that homosexual behavior is part of his desirable diversity therefore God loves homosexual behavior, I would offer the following corrective. God does indeed love his creation including all of its inhabitants. However, God's creation currently exists in a fallen state in which conditions occur that are not desirable. Does God love those persons so afflicted by these conditions? Of course, but his desire is not that we resign ourselves to the effects of the fall but rather that we resist them. Thus the gift of medical science is one way in which we endeavor to do so. Many children are born with a wide variety of deleterious diseases and conditions, which we have worked very hard to correct and/or mitigate for the benefit of the afflicted. This is true love and compassion. And yet, in matters of sexual disorders and deviant sexual behavior we are encouraged to accept these as "normal." Why? Because there are those who are determined to destabilize these categories in support of an agenda that seeks to remove all moral boundaries from sexual conduct. One only need study the history of sexual ethics to discover that these are cultural manifestations and not biological realities (see J.D. Unwin, Ph.D.).

Again, thank you for your response. I hope I have answered your concerns sufficiently.

Thank you for your response, and I will certainly not try to change your opinion based on several lines of an ancient Aramaic book translated multiple times, but do consider that these 'abnormalities' were created by a loving God, just as he created parrotfish whose females change to male in order to reproduce.

As far as the 1960s clinical people, like Dr Meyer, and the later 'autogynephilia' promoters, like Ray Blanchard and Ann Lawrence (a support group colleague 10 years or so ago), are concerned, they have been thoroughly debunked by many professionals and transsexual individuals, myself and my husband included.

I am not a psychologist; I'm a Naval Academy graduate. My doctorate is in Naval Engineering with over 30 years of program management support for the US Navy both as male- and female-identified. Nevertheless, as a non-professional support person for about 2000 transsexuals, I know less than 5 from that cohort who detransitioned back to the original birth certificate gender.

Are there transsexuals who are unhappy? Yes. Unhappy with relatives, medical and insurance organizations that impede their attaining their true identities; political and religious organizations that bash them as a means to attaining power over rather than power with; media organizations (think the ultra-right wing Fox News) that belittle, demean them and call for their ostracization or rejoice over their brutal murders.

When I asked my minister (before I transitioned) why God had given me this challenge he answered that we don't get to choose God's challenge, only when to accept the challenge and resolve it. About two years later, he was a guest of honor when our new minister married my husband and me, months before my surgery and a year before my husband's. We have been happily married for over 13 years and have devoted much of our lives to helping others discover their truth (through professional counseling). Without following our own truth those years ago, known/sensed since early childhood), I have no doubt that we would each be long dead.

Praise be to a loving God.

Me ka mahalo.

Good article. Yes, we have finally reached insanity in our laws and governments. Thanks.
