In Defense of Marriage - Part VI

Soviet communism attempted to construct a society under a new social and ethical system, which subverted the natural moral order. In doing so, people were compelled to live in contradiction to their conscience. Without the influence of the conscience, moral governance shifted from the self to the state. The lesson here is this: when the society demands conduct that is in contradiction to what mankind knows in his heart to be right and true, the state will coerce such conduct. This principle is summed up in “Colson’s Law,” which essentially states that the more a society is governed by conscience, the less it requires outside enforcement or police. The less conscience, or self-governance, the more police will be required (i.e. totalitarianism).

This same pattern accompanies activist efforts, which seek to legitimize homosexual acts through the imposition of same-sex marriage (SSM). Unable to rely on the democratic process to advance their agenda, gay-rights advocates have instead employed activist judges, propaganda campaigns, indoctrination of youth, and intimidation tactics to impose their moral vision.

The essence of the homosexual agenda and its demand for legal marriage is not about the expansion of civil rights. It is, instead, committed to the complete reordering of our society. Paula Ettlebrick, the former legal director of the Lambda Legal Defense Fund, as much as confirmed this when she said:

Being queer is more than setting up house, sleeping with a person of the same gender, and seeking state approval for doing so . . . Being queer means pushing the parameters of sex, sexuality, and family, and in the process transforming the very fabric of society (quoted in William B. Rubenstein, Since When is Marriage a Path to Liberation? Lesbians, Gay Men, and the Law [NY: New York Press, 1993], 398, 400.).

In the minds of such, it is Christianity (and religion, in general) that stands in the way of this social transformation. Therefore, it is only natural that as SSM gains traction, there will follow a suppression of religion and persecution of the religious. Harvard professor of law Mary Ann Glendon acknowledged this real consequence of legalizing same-sex marriage. She writes:

Religious freedom, too, is at stake…. Every person and every religion that disagrees will be labeled as bigoted and openly discriminated against. The ax must fall most heavily on religious persons and groups that don’t go along. Religious institutions will be hit with lawsuits if they refuse to compromise their principles (Mary Ann Glendon, “For Better or for Worse? The federal marriage amendment would strike a blow for freedom,” opinion post to online editorial page, The Wall Street Journal, 25 February 2004).

Under unrelenting pressure from this despotic minority, Western nations have already begun to criminalize and suppress any public criticism of homosexuality, encroaching upon our most fundamental rights of conscience and free speech.

In British Columbia, Dr. Chris Kempling, a school counselor, was suspended without pay for three months in 2005 for writing a letter to the editor of the local newspaper criticizing the Liberal government’s same-sex marriage legislation. In 2006, Canadian professor David Mullan was fined $2,100 by Cape Breton University, after he told a student homosexuality was “unnatural.”

In January of last year, Christian Vanneste, a member of France’s ruling party, was fined almost $4,000 under French hate speech law for comments opposing homosexuality. What was so egregious? Vanneste dared to suggest that homosexuality was “inferior” to heterosexuality and said the practice would be “dangerous for humanity if it was pushed to the limit.”

Last year, the Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites, and Transsexuals (ABGLT) filed a criminal complaint against Christian activist Julio Severo and the National Vision for Christian Awareness for inciting “hatred” against homosexuals, and “homophobia.” The complaint was made because Severo regularly denounces homosexual behavior as immoral on his Web site, and opposes the goals of the homosexual movement. Severo and his ministry were successfully prosecuted simply for denouncing homosexual behavior as sinful during a campaign to promote family values. As a result, the ministry was ordered to cancel its campaign and all related events.

In America—the land of the free—a Christian photographer who declined to photograph a same-sex “commitment ceremony” was hauled before the New Mexico Human Rights Division (NMHRD) in January of this year. Elane Photography turned down the job because their beliefs were in conflict with the message communicated by the ceremony. The same-sex couple filed a complaint with the NMHRD, which is now trying Elane Photography under state antidiscrimination laws for sexual orientation discrimination.

Last year, June Sheldon, an adjunct professor teaching a human heredity course at San Jose City College, was fired for answering a student’s in-class question about heredity and homosexual behavior. Apparently professor Sheldon did not offer the student the “right” answer. Marcia Walden, a licensed counselor at Computer Sciences Corporation in Atlanta, was fired after she chose to refer a person seeking counsel in a same-sex relationship to another colleague. The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights threatened to prosecute the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of the United Methodist Church after it refused to allow a same-sex civil union ceremony at one of its worship facilities. Students in Boyd County, Kentucky, were threatened with “suspension” and the “possibility of court referral” if they publicly voiced moral objections to the school’s diversity training, which normalized homosexual behavior. A Christian high school student in Michigan was suspended for refusing to remove an “I’m Straight” sticker from his t-shirt when other students were wearing duct tape over their mouths to show support for the pro-homosexual National Day of Silence.

And in a most ludicrous act, Christian publishers Zondervan and Thomas Nelson are facing a $60 million federal lawsuit for publishing “homophobic and prejudicial” translations of the Bible, from a man who claims he and other homosexuals have suffered based on what the suit claims is a misinterpretation of the Bible.

These are just a minuscule sampling of the many actions emerging as the push for SSM gains momentum. This is nothing less than tyranny and injustice under the banner of tolerance and acceptance. With the advance of the SSM movement there has followed an increased tyranny of the state—a concept unthinkable in America—and yet this is one predictable consequence of imposing a moral value that is in contrast to moral truth and the human conscience.

Scare, Scare, Scare. Typical religious right propaganda. Oh the poor persecuted x-tians, unable to spread their bigoted message.

When the citizens of California reject Prop 8, when New York, New Jersey, & Vermont pass marriage equality through their legistatures & their Governors sign it, then will you shut up about "activist judges". What will the excuse be then? "Radical Legislatures"? "Evil Governors"? Boo Hoo, your irrational way of life is finally going to the way of the dinosaur.

What a horrendously misleading piece of "journalism." Sour grapes, I'd say. Gay couples will have every secular right that straight couples do, it's just a matter of time. The time of gays being discriminated against is nearing an end. Ha ha!

Why shouldn't everyone have the right to marry, to vote, to articulate their opinions.

AJ: "Why shouldn't everyone have the right to marry, to vote, to articulate their opinions."

Precisely the point AJ. The right to state (or even have) an opinion (about homosexual behaviour) is being removed from Christians. This is George Orwell's "1984" where our very thoughts are to be controlled. This idea that it's one's 'human right' not to be offended by anything another says can only lead to anarchy or totalitarianism - think it through!

I am a 50 year old gay man. I have been gay since I was conscious enough to notice sexual attraction. I didn't choose it - it chose me. And if I could do anything to change this I would! I would rather be heterosexual more than anything else, and for one reason only - Persecution.

It sadens me greely when I read articles from devoted men of the cloth, the crucifix or the rock or Peter judge a section of society with no understanding of what it is they are judging. You are shown one homosexual selected from a bad example and tought they are all the same. As it goes with every other things in society that you feel personally uncomfortable with - you don't like it you judge it and try to remove it.

And as far as your views on the supposed "gay agenda" to wreck havoc on all of society by overthrowing the constitution of marriage... you are talking bigoted science fiction! Rubbish.

It's not about fears that gay rights will ruin the constitution of marriage - it's your personal demons struggling to cope with new neighbors. And that is all it would amount to - gya marriages would constitute nothing more than what already exists in your neighborhood - gay married neighbors. Oh, but you already know this. You just need something to campaign about to make it look like you are doing your job.

Dear Bill,

I’m sorry you feel that way but the issues are a little more complex than you present. I (nor any other Christian, Muslim or Jew) am not the one trying to change an institution essential to the well-being of children and society. It is these efforts that have forced those of us who care about the well-being of society to respond. This would be true if tomorrow, people with a proclivity for adultery, or any other destructive behavior, organized and demanded special protection as a minority class of people and sought to change the laws in order to normalize those proclivities. No one says you can’t live as you want, you can. However, the gay political agenda is not content with that. Instead they are determined to force their particular view of morality on the rest of us and silence, by means of the state, any opposition. You don’t have that right. You carelessly employ such terms as “persecution,” “bigotry,” “fear” and “hate” to label those who don’t agree with your position. In a pluralistic culture, we believe in the free competition of ideas. Unfortunately, the idea that homosexuality is somehow natural, normal, and worthy of celebration violates both conscience and moral tradition, which is why the gay agenda must “force” acceptance of its lifestyle.

Bill, if you were my neighbor, I would welcome you into my home and hopefully enjoy a friendship with you (at least I would try). You are not what you do and homosexuality does not define you. You are a human being made in the image of a God who loves you in spite of your behavior and therefore are worthy of love and respect. The same is true for me. I am no better, no worse simply one who has been reconciled to this God and the relationship, which my sin has broken, has been restored by the atoning work of Christ on the cross. This same reconciliation is available to all who repent of their willful independence and submit to His loving rule. I am not your enemy, sin is your enemy but again there is hope to those who cease striving against God and allow Him to restore what sin has taken from you.

I commend you for your well written and facutual piece and the manner you dealt with opposition. You are a asset to the faith and encouragement to those of us you have chosen to follow Him

Very well written and factual, supported by the Word of God and not the author's personal agenda. But nothing new, because the Bible let us know that these things will happen, and even worst. People have set up god's unto themselves, in an effort to be able to maintain their own lifestyles. If a person will disregard the Word of God, and go about changing it to suit their lifestyles, it is not much that we can do but to pray. The Bible let us know that the true people of God will be hated above all men, and some will be put to death, because of the Gospel. "If the Gospel is hid, it is hidden to those who are lost" 2Cor. 4:3.
We are in the middle of perilous times, when people will call good evil, and evil good.
But be sure of this one thing, God knows those that are His, and in the end it is He who will separate the sheep from the goat. If a person will not hear the voice of the Spirit, neither will he hear the voice of a righteous man.We must speak the Word
whether they will hear or whether they will forbear.
The Word of God is for correction, one cannot be corrected if he does not think, or have have convinced himself that he is that he is not wrong. So, let the wheat and the tares continue to grow together, God will do the separating; it is almost harvest time.

As I read this article and the many responses, I see how very far the enemy has pushed us apart as a nation. In love, I say to those who make the case they have no choice. You do! You can be set free from this as surely as a drug addict, or alcoholic can be set free. I speak from experience. What man cannot do on his own, God can do, and is willing. It is not hate, that points us to sin, and its consequences, but love of God that does. If we begin to allow this, where will it end? Men who have a proclivity for children, many wives, adultery, pornography etc. They will all begin to scream for what they perceive as their rights. Every society that has ever been, in the history of the earth, that openly embraced unnatural laws, ended. They exist no more! The same will hold true for this! We are all sinners and have the natural inclination to do that which pleases us. What people of faith are trying to say is, it is not what pleases us that we do, but what pleases our Creator! He makes no junk, Satan perverts that which God made! He has always done that! Seek Christ, and the light will shine on you, and the truth will set you free! He died for you as He did for us, do not make His suffering in vain.
